Panama’s Government Delivers 1,125 Housing Solutions with an Investment of B/.25.7 million for the Benefit of Bocatoreña Families. 

President Cortizo Cohen participated, along with executives from Naturgy, in the historic inauguration of the interconnection of Isla Colón to the National Interconnected System through submarine cabling from Almirante, which puts an end to the use of thermoelectric plants, as reported in a presidential press release.

“The Urbanización Isla Colón will improve the quality of life of more than 1,700 Panamanians, it has parks, sports areas, concrete streets and sidewalks, paved sidewalks, a fluvial and sanitary system, drinking water, a wastewater treatment plant, and more,”  President Cortizo.

 

In the GTC, Gira de Trabajo Comunitario, (Community work tour) through Miviot, (Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning), 1,125 housing solutions were delivered: 486 homes in the Urbanizacion Isla Colón, 574 certificates of legalization of lots, 64 houses from the Plan Progreso and a housing improvement.

President Cortizo Cohen announced that all the beneficiaries of the Urbanizacion Isla Colón from the La Solución neighborhood will be exempted from paying for their homes.

“…The project represents the opportunity of a new life for the families of the La Solución community, who lived in inadequate conditions,” President Cortizo.

 

Colon Island, Bocas del Toro. April 28, 2023. Panama’s National Government, through the Community Work Tour (GTC) No. 134 led by the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo Cohen in Bocas del Toro, delivered 1,125 housing solutions with an investment of B/.25.7 million, inaugurated the Isla Colón interconnection project to the National Interconnected System, and gave orders to proceed to build another 836 homes in that province and six classrooms for the Finca 62 school.

The End of Thermoelectric Plants on Isla Colón

In the company of the directors of the Naturgy Group, President Cortizo Cohen participated in the historic interconnection of Isla Colón to the National Interconnected System through the installation of submarine cables from the mainland in Almirante, thereby eliminating the supply of electricity through diesel thermoelectric plants on the island, achieving a safer and more efficient system.

Promoted by the Autoridad Nacional de los Servicios Públicos (ASEP) through the Gabinete Turístico, and built by the Naturgy group, which made an investment of more than B/.30 million, the work includes the installation of 25.4 kilometers of cable covered in 464 poles and 44 kilometers of submarine cable between Almirante and the island.

The president reiterated his administration’s support to facilitate private investment like this, which, in addition to generating local jobs, has a direct impact on the economy of Isla Colón, particularly in the tourism sector, in addition to benefiting thousands of inhabitants of the head of the province.

Over a Thousand Housing Solutions and Title Deeds

At another point in the GTC and accompanied by the Minister of Housing and Territorial Planning (Miviot), Rogelio Paredes, President Cortizo Cohen participated in the delivery of 1,125 house solutions to benefit approximately 3,937 people from the districts of Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí Grande, Almirante and Changuinola, with a total investment of B/.25,743,208.64.

 

 

The 1,125 housing solutions correspond to 486 homes that were delivered in the Urbanizacion Isla Colón, on the road to Boca de Drago, with an investment of B/.24.6 million. Through this project, 1,701 people benefit. The houses consist of a living-dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms, sanitary service, laundry and portal.

The urbanization also has parks, sports areas, a gazebo, green areas, a wastewater treatment plant, and five of the houses were built with adaptations for people with disabilities.

It also includes the delivery in different parts of the province of 64 homes of the Plan Progreso, with an investment of B/.1.1 million; a housing improvement for B/.8,750.00 for a family of six members, one of them with a disability. In addition, through Miviot, 574 lots ready for billing were granted, with which 1,125 families legalized their housing status.

President Cortizo Cohen also delivered three orders to proceed for the construction of 836 homes for the benefit of 2,926 residents of Boca with an investment of B/.25.2 million.

The houses will be built in the banana sector, Changuinola and Bambú urbanizations.

 

 

 

For its part, the Autoridad Nacional de Administración de Tierras  (Anati) granted 48 property titles for the benefit of low income families in the region.

Through the Ministerio de Educación (Meduca), an order to proceed was granted for the study, design, plan development and construction of 6 theoretical classrooms and the shed at the Centro de Educación Básica General in Finca 62, for an amount of B/ .559,529.28.

Highway Improvements of B/.88 million

At another point in the tour, the president and the Minister de Obras Públicas, Rafael Sabonge, participated in the inspection of the project for the rehabilitation and financing of the La Feria – Playa Paunch road and internal streets on Isla Colón. This project, developed by the Consorcio Isla Bocas for an amount of B/.88,439,875.73, consists of a length of 28.30 kilometers and will benefit more than 7 thousand inhabitants.

President Cortizo Cohen was accompanied in this GTC by his team of ministers, vice ministers and Eleazar Gómez Midi, governor of the province of Bocas del Toro, among other authorities.
