Higüey, La Altagracia Celebrates Cultural Carnival
Higüey, La Altagracia, Dominican Republic – The Carnival is back in town! With the view of the Basilica in the background and hundreds of locals gathered in colorful colors, Higüey hosted its cultural carnival on Sunday, July 23.

The carnival went around the city and stopped at El Parque de La Salud, where there was a stage set up and people waiting to see the participants in their costumes. There were a variety of dancers in traditional Dominican suits as well as pageant princesses on horses waving gracefully at the town.

All ages were welcome at the carnival which consisted of traditional dance performances, a live Merengue band and a comedy show by the well known Dominican actor, Fausto Mata. There were many concession stands around the street selling finger foods like empanadas as well as cool refreshments for the afternoon heat.

A variety of famous Higüey natives and special guests were in attendance, like Rafa Rosario, from the popular Merengue group Los Hermanos Rosario. The invitees spoke about how proud they were to be from La Altagracia.
The carnival was made possible by dozens of sponsors ranging from local clinics to the Bavaro International Airport Foundation. It has been over a decade since a cultural carnival was celebrated in the city of Higüey, so it was a special day for Altagracianos, old and young.

The people of Higüey and other neighboring towns around La Altagracia danced all afternoon and night to the sound of Merengue as they enjoyed the festivities of the first Cultural Carnival hosted in their city.
