CONAIE Activates the Indigenous Guard

CONAIE activates the indigenous guard after violent outbreaks in Ecuador. The CONAIE movement announced on Tuesday night the activation of the indigenous guard in the communities of ancestral peoples. CONAIE is the Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador and its president is Leonidas Iza Salazar. 

In the face of the climate of violence generated in the country by organized crime groups, CONAIE announced the activation of the indigenous guard in the communities of Ecuador’s indigenous peoples.

“We find ourselves in a situation of unprecedented violence, caused by organized crime, drug trafficking, and mafias. This is the result of a structural problem, originating from the radicalization of neoliberal policies that have destroyed the state and its institutions, leaving them incapable of responding. These policies have also generated more inequality and poverty, creating social conditions conducive to the recruitment of young people by crime.”

 

 

“Criminals, drug traffickers, and mafias have taken advantage of the permissiveness granted by various authorities in recent years, infiltrating the majority of state entities and weakening the institutions responsible for public security.

Criminals have used the strategy of fear and chaos to intimidate and subdue the Ecuadorian people, who have not received adequate guarantees from a failed and reduced state.

To this crisis is added the lack of leadership and political vision of the recent governments that have come to power based on false hopes and attacks on various social actors. These governments have prioritized their personal agendas to favor large economic groups at the expense of the poverty and suffering of the majority of the population.”

 

 

 

“In the face of this situation, we call on the peoples and nationalities to keep community guards active, control access to their territories, and protect the life and integrity of the communities.

We also call for national unity to combine efforts among all sectors of society, social organizations, civil society, peoples, and nationalities to overcome this crisis.

Fear and threats should not defeat us, as the future of our land and future generations is at stake.

The national government must act within the existing legal framework, respect organizations as legitimate spaces for citizen defense, and recognize that Ecuador is made by all of us.”

 

 

“Furthermore, we urge the national government and the national assembly not to use this crisis as an excuse to pass laws or anti-popular policies that affect the majority of the population, as this will only worsen the situation and provoke a popular reaction in defense of rights in a situation that has not been caused by the people but by failed governments,” Council of the CONAIE government.
