Guatemalan Migration Authorities Verify Documentation of First Migrant Caravan of 2024

Guatemala, January 21, 2024. The timely coordination between personnel from the Guatemalan Institute of Migration and agents of the National Civil Police allowed the verification of Hondurans who formed the first migrant caravan of 2024.
Migration personnel have been in communication with Honduran authorities since last Friday when a group of people departed from the bus terminal in San Pedro Sula, on their way to the United States.
In this regard, a verification checkpoint was set up at the Motagua bridge, at kilometer 305 of the Atlantic route, in Izabal. The institute’s personnel verified the migration records.
People were reminded that they must comply with the established migration requirements to enter and continue transit in the country.
The migration institute reported that the delegates prioritized the attention to children and adolescents who are part of this group of people.
The movement of people disintegrated on Saturday afternoon after around 80 people completed their migration checks and regularized entry into Guatemala.
This past Sunday, monitoring continued at the border posts with Honduras. In this aspect, the Guatemalan Institute of Migration constantly communicates with Honduran authorities who alert about migrant groups.
Vice President Karin Herrera meets with the National Migration Authority
The new Guatemalan Vice President met with the National Migration Authority to coordinate actions regarding the migrant caravan, reports Prensa Libre.
During the meeting, action plans were defined for the first migrant caravan of the year, which originated from Honduras. On Sunday, a caravan of about 500 migrants, whose final destination was the United States, was dissolved in Guatemala. This caravan arrived in the country from Honduras, according to the Guatemalan Institute of Migration (IGM).
In this context, the first meeting of the National Migration Authority was held Sunday, chaired by Vice President Karin Herrera. Its objective was to define an action plan for mass mobilizations. It involved the participation of the ministers of Governance, Foreign Relations, Social Development, Labor, and Social Security, as well as the Executive Secretary of the National Migrant Council and the director of the IGM.
It was reported that due to the caravan that departed from Honduran soil and was en route to the United States passing through Guatemala, the migration authorities of the country have been in coordination with their counterparts in Honduras since Friday, January 19.
As a result, Migration personnel and the National Civil Police carried out an operation at the Motagua bridge, at kilometer 305 of the Atlantic route, in Izabal. “The passage of migrants was successfully halted without the use of force,” as reported by the IGM. Individuals who did not meet the requirements to stay in Guatemalan territory returned to their country of origin.
