During Holy Week, many young people and adults have been enjoying reading and playing games at the National Library of El Salvador, BINAES. Situated in the historic center, the library remains open 24 hours a day, serving as a hub of learning for everyone.

Inaugurated on November 14, 2023, by President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador, BINAES is an important project financed by China, providing a space for many young people to learn and even do homework.

Throughout Holy Week, the government organizes various activities through its Ministries of Culture, Tourism, Public Works, and others, creating a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for Salvadorans to have a great time.

BINAES offers the Key to Knowledge, allowing anyone to sign up. This gives visitors access to reading materials, traditional dance games, and computers. However, before playing games, it’s important to spend thirty minutes reading.

Additionally, there are two restaurants where visitors can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner, along with top-notch cafes. On the first floor, there’s a special area for children where mothers can breastfeed them comfortably, thanks to the Nacer con Cariño program led by First Lady Gabriela de Bukele.

BINAES also offers thematic rooms, a LEGO zone, a technology area, and a storytelling area. With over 360,000 physical books spread across 7 levels, the library provides seven themed areas to promote reading and creativity among Salvadoran children and young people.

In Antiquity, the earliest traces of libraries were found, mainly consisting of large halls where clay tablets containing knowledge of the time were stored, including accounts, economic transactions, and texts on astronomy, mathematics, or medicine.

On the fifth level of BINAES, you will find the General Collection, which boasts a wide array of books displayed on open shelves. These books cover various genres, including narrative, poetry, art, politics, Latin American oral tradition, classics, science fiction, self-improvement, psychology, exact sciences, technology, and more.

The National Library of El Salvador, known simply as BINAES, is a national public institution rebuilt by the Government of El Salvador in cooperation with the Government of the People’s Republic of China on November 14, 2023.

Library Rules

  • Respect your peers.
  • Know that the material is for everyone and take care of it.
  • Keep silence inside the library.
  • Eat outside the library.
  • Use the computer for academic purposes.
  • If listening to music, use headphones.
  • Know that the library is not a workshop.
  • Store your backpack or purse in our lockers on the first level.
  • Register your laptops, tablets, or books upon entry on the second level.
  • No pets or food inside the premises.
  • Remember, BINAES is a noise-free space, and visitors can also request guidance from librarians in each area.

 

Mauricio Alexander Cáceres García | Journalist, El Salvador & Latin America

Mauricio Alexander Cáceres García is a Correspondent for Latina Republic focused on El Salvador and Latin America. He is a renowned Photojournalist and Documentarian from El Salvador. Migration is personal to him. His father and family moved to the United States as migrants. His work showcases the power of human stories. Among his specializations, Cáceres has reported on “The migrant route” of the Guatemalan border, Mexico and the United States. He personally completed the migrant route to the US on four occasions. Cáceres has a degree in Migration from the Universidad de Centro América, UCA. Cáceres has served as an Editor of the newspaper Más, EDH and elsalvador.com. He has extensive experience in national and international news coverage, studied journalism and has won several photography awards throughout Latin America, including second place in a photographic contest centered on the migrant woman, and earning the Santa Clara de Asís prize for his report on the migrant route.
