Costa Rica is the Happiest Country in Latin America

Costa Rica is the 12th happiest country in the world and number one in Latin America, according to the World Happiness Report 2024 published in March.

The report assigns a score to each country (from 1 to 10) based on its inhabitants’ perception of their overall life and well-being, considering the presence of positive and negative emotions.

It also takes into account people’s happiness at different stages of life and other indicators such as economic well-being, social support, income, health, freedom, and absence of corruption, among others.

With 6.95 points, Costa Rica entered the top 20 globally, the first time since the second edition of the ranking in 2013, being the only representative of the Americas along with Canada, which ranks 15th.

In Costa Rica’s case, individuals under 30 report feeling happier in terms of overall satisfaction, placing the country at 11th place globally, while those over 60 are the least happy, ranking 17th.

Costa Rica climbed 11 places compared to last year when it ranked 23rd.

Finland (7.74), Denmark (7.58), and Iceland (7.52) are the happiest countries in the world according to the study, while Lesotho (3.18), Lebanon (2.70), and Afghanistan (1.72) are at the bottom.

In Latin America, the top ten happiest countries are:

  1. Costa Rica
  2. Mexico
  3. Uruguay
  4. El Salvador
  5. Chile
  6. Panama
  7. Guatemala
  8. Nicaragua
  9. Brazil
  10. Argentina

The report is published every year on the occasion of the International Day of Happiness, commemorated every March 20, and analyzes 143 countries.
