Creativity and craftsmanship come together in the latest exhibition, “Jewelry: Techniques and Processes,” hosted by the Escuela de Artesanías under the Secretariat of Culture in Mexico. This educational showcase, open until October 25, 2024, presents over 300 pieces created by 70 students, highlighting the technical mastery and creative evolution developed over six semesters of intensive training.
The exhibition, organized through the Jewelry Academy of the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL), is a culmination of the comprehensive curriculum that introduces students to approximately 50 different jewelry-making techniques. From traditional methods like lost wax casting and filigree to advanced techniques like mokume gane and kum-boo, the program offers students a vast repertoire of skills.

Alejandro Alva Martínez, the coordinator of the Jewelry Academy, explains that students begin with fundamental techniques such as sawing, filing, and soldering to create simple objects like rings and chains. As they advance, they master more complex processes, such as repoussé and mixed metal engraving, eventually gaining the ability to work with larger formats and precious stones.
The exhibition offers a glimpse into the diverse range of skills and creativity honed throughout the program. Visitors can admire an array of stunning jewelry, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings, each piece a testament to the technical and artistic growth of the students. According to Martínez, the ultimate goal is to equip graduates not only with the skills to create their own workshops and thrive in the professional world but also with the ability to pursue careers in teaching, research, and design.

The showcase, held at the Main Gallery of the School of Crafts, is open to the public Monday to Friday, with visiting hours from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Admission is free, offering everyone the chance to experience firsthand the intricate beauty and expertise behind the art of jewelry-making.

The curriculum is structured around three progressive levels: introductory, constructive, and proposal. In the first two semesters, students focus on foundational skills, such as basic sawing, filing, and soldering, while learning geometric drawing and modeling. By the third and fourth semesters, they move on to more complex processes like stone setting and metal engraving, creating larger and more intricate pieces. In the final two semesters, students tackle design challenges, applying their technical knowledge to create objects with diverse formats and uses.
Beyond technique, the program integrates artistic, theoretical, and methodological learning, offering courses in drawing, history of culture, and research methods. This approach aims to equip students with the tools to not only craft beautiful jewelry but also understand its cultural and economic significance.
