Exploring the World: Fatimah Alayafi’s Travel and Cultural Photography
“No matter how dark or challenging a setting may seem, there is always light to be found if you look closely enough,” Fatimah Alayafi.
Fatimah Alayafi’s photographic journey is deeply intertwined with her unique upbringing and her insatiable curiosity about the world. Born in Mexico City to a Lebanese-Mexican mother and an Arab father, Fatimah’s early years were marked by a cross-cultural experience, as her family moved frequently due to her father’s work.
“At the age of four, I moved abroad due to my father’s job, spending my entire childhood and teenage years living in several countries. This made me a third-culture kid, meaning that I was raised in a series of cultures different from my parents’ culture and home country,” says Fatimah.
Her exposure to multiple cultures instilled a sense of curiosity, flexibility, and open-mindedness; traits that continue to guide her both personally and professionally. “Growing up in a multicultural environment, I was surrounded by people from diverse cultural backgrounds, beliefs, and religions,” she says, “This profoundly shaped the person I am today.”
Fatimah considers herself a curious, flexible, and open-minded individual who enjoys connecting with all kinds of people. This upbringing also fueled her love for traveling and exploring new cultures. “I’m always eager to enrich my perspective of the world and strive to become the best version of myself.”
Fatimah’s love for photography began at a young age, sparked by countless afternoons spent leafing through her mother’s photo albums. The photographs, brimming with memories and untold stories, ignited a deep fascination with the art of capturing moments.
“I spent hours as a child, captivated by my mother’s photo albums. I was fascinated by how a single photograph could hold so much—both memories and untold stories,” Fatimah recalls. “As I grew older, I began creating my own collection, borrowing photos from her albums and arranging them in my own way.”
By the mid-90s, Fatimah took the next step in her photography journey, using her parents’ analog camera. “I vividly remember the excitement of receiving my first disposable camera—it was a defining moment for me,” she says. “Even at just seven years old, I knew photography was something I wanted to pursue. Over time, I experimented with entry-level digital cameras, capturing moments from my daily life and travels as I honed my skills.”
Fatimah also delved into photo editing, exploring programs like Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop. “I spent my summer holidays teaching myself how to use these tools,” she recalls. “Learning both photography and editing from scratch has been an incredibly rewarding journey, and I’m proud of the skills I’ve developed along the way.”
As Fatimah’s passion grew, travel photography emerged as one of her greatest interests, blending her love for exploration with her natural talent for capturing beauty. For her, photography became a way to celebrate the diverse places, cultures, and traditions she encountered.
“To me, photography is an essential part of travel. It allows me to capture the beauty of different places and preserve the memories of the moments I experience,” she says.
Photography is also a way for Fatimah to share her experiences with others, giving them a glimpse of the world through her eyes. “Perhaps, it might even inspire them to explore the world around them. This doesn’t necessarily mean traveling to the other side of the planet,” she clarifies.
“Sometimes, the next town over offers something new and different—something that can shift your perspective, ignite your curiosity, and motivate you to venture further on your next journey,” Fatimah shares.
“When I travel, I strive to capture the beauty around me. While some places are naturally breathtaking, I’ve learned that even the most difficult or desolate environments have their own unique charm. It could be the intricate engravings on an abandoned structure, the mischievous smile of a market vendor, the glow of a mesmerizing sunset, or a child’s joy while playing by a fountain. No matter how dark or challenging a setting may seem, there is always light to be found if you look closely enough. Through my work, I hope to convey that light and share it with the world,” she says.
Her travels have taken her to some of the world’s most fascinating destinations, but it was a trip to Japan in May 2024 that deeply marked both her personally and as a photographer.
“One trip that deeply marked me was my journey to Japan in May 2024. It was filled with profoundly emotional and beautiful memories, and I felt a strong desire to capture everything—places, food, people,culture, and those fleeting moments that became so dear to me. Japan was probably the trip where I took the greatest number of photographs and spent the most time editing my best shots because of how much they meant to me.”
Reflecting on her Japan experience, she recalls, “Each photograph tells a story, revealing different sides of Japan. From the cyberpunk energy of Tokyo’s bustling districts to the tranquility of Kyoto’s serene temples, or from a quick, machine-served bowl of ramen in a tiny izakaya to an elaborate five-course omakase meal. Japan is a land of contrasts: the perfect fusion of high-speed modernity and deeply rooted tradition.”
Her time in Oaxaca, a culturally rich state in southern Mexico, also stands out as a transformative experience. “Oaxaca is a photographer’s paradise,” she says, describing its blend of pre-Hispanic ruins, vibrant traditions, and exceptional cuisine.
“Capturing the essence of Oaxaca was an immensely rewarding experience. It allowed me to showcase the beauty of my home country and share the incredible richness it has to offer, a perspective that is often overlooked amidst the negative portrayals in the media.”
Urban photography, too, is an essential aspect of Fatimah’s portfolio. Having lived in bustling megacities like Mexico City, as well as smaller European cities, she finds herself drawn to the energy, diversity, and architectural complexity of urban environments.
“I have always lived in urban spaces. The energy, diversity, and architectural complexity of these environments deeply captivate me. I believe cities have countless stories to tell, from their history and local customs to their rhythm and, most importantly, the daily lives of their inhabitants,” she says.
Fatimah’s approach to urban photography is often spontaneous. “I head out into the streets, camera in hand, capturing moments or scenes that grab my attention or seem to tell a story. This could be an iconic building with a rich history, a striking interaction between a group of people, a single person in a pivotal moment, or even the smallest detail of an urban object that reflects a city’s unique energy,” Fatimah details.
Exploring urban photography has heightened her awareness and curiosity about her surroundings. As Fatimah notes, “It has encouraged me to delve deeper into the cities I inhabit or visit, often leading to hours of exploration. In Mexico City, my hometown, I’ve discovered new areas and hidden gems that I had never encountered before. These places often reveal aspects of the city’s story that are lesser-known or overlooked, not just to me but to many others.”
When traveling, Fatimah dedicates hours to exploring new cities, wandering through diverse neighborhoods ranging from bustling city centers to quiet residential areas.
”For me, this is the best way to understand a city’s culture and capture its true essence,” she details. “Urban photography allows me to immerse myself in these spaces, uncovering the layers that make each city unique and telling its story through my lens.”
Fatimah’s work also reflects her passion for cultural photography, particularly capturing the essence of Mexico’s diverse traditions. “Mexico is a unique blend of cultures, beliefs, and histories,” she notes, explaining that its rich cultural diversity—from pre-Hispanic monuments to modern street culture—provides endless inspiration.
For Fatimah, cultural photography is about capturing the elements that make a country, city, or specific community unique. This includes emblematic landmarks, history, gastronomy, people, festivities, and even everyday moments.
“To me, it is closely tied to travel photography, as one of my main objectives during my travels is to immerse myself in local culture—a perspective that is reflected in my travel shots,” she says.
When it comes to Mexican culture, Fatimah finds both its spaces and its people endlessly fascinating. “Mexico is a unique blend of cultures, beliefs, and histories—a pre-Hispanic land, later conquered by the Spanish, and subsequently influenced by African, French, and Middle Eastern migrations,” she details.
“I truly believe Mexico is a photographer’s paradise,” Fatimah shares with enthusiasm. “What makes it so special? It’s the seamless blend of colonial Spanish architecture, pre-Hispanic monuments, and modern skyscrapers; the vibrant indigenous communities, culturally diverse towns, and dynamic street culture; the rich ethnic and social diversity of its population; the contrasting landscapes—jungles, forests, mountains, deserts, and coastlines; and, of course, the world-renowned gastronomy,” she celebrates.
As Fatimah points out, Mexico’s incredible diversity stands out, with each region offering its own unique culture and traditions. “But one thing unites all Mexicans,” she says. “Our zest for life, our laid-back, joyful attitude.”
For Fatimah, photography has deepened her connection to the world around her. “What once seemed like ordinary cultural interactions or traditions now stand out through the lens of my camera,” she reflects. “It’s as though the camera has made me more aware of the beauty in the everyday moments.”
“Photography has helped me recognize the value in these moments—no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. They’ve become meaningful representations of Mexican culture and traditions,” Fatimah expresses.
“Through photography, I’ve also gained a deeper understanding of cultural diversity, not only within Mexico but around the world. It has taught me that no place is entirely homogenous, despite the superficial similarities some nations may appear to have. These differences often stem from a combination of history, ethnic influences, and modern culture,” she explains.
Fatimah hopes to continue exploring cultural photography, using it as a tool to uncover the intricate layers of culture and tradition both at home and abroad. It is a passion that enriches her travels, deepens her appreciation for diversity, and inspires her to share these vibrant stories with the world.
“Photography has taught me the value of capturing moments,” Fatimah says. “A story can unfold through a series of photographs, and sometimes, a single, well-taken image is enough to convey the reality of a moment in time.”
As Fatimah reflects, “Life moves so quickly, and being able to look back on the beauty you’ve captured can evoke a wide range of emotions. For Fatimah, the power of a photograph is undeniable. “Photography has made me much more observant. I’ve become more aware of my surroundings, and I’ve developed a habit of noticing details I might have overlooked before.”
Looking back, if Fatimah could offer advice to her younger self, it would be simple yet profound: “Always capture the real, raw moments right before your eyes. It doesn’t matter if others may not find them appealing—what matters is what draws your attention and resonates with you.”
For Fatimah, “Photography is about the story you want to tell, the emotions you hope to evoke, and the perspective you want to share. It’s your art and your gift to the world.” She offers this advice: “Keep your mind open and your eyes sharp. What once seemed insignificant might suddenly become the focal point of your attention and the subject of a powerful photograph.”
Reflecting on her journey, Fatimah encourages budding photographers, especially those drawn to travel or cultural photography: “Follow whatever brings you the most joy. For me, that’s traveling, which naturally led to my passion for travel photography. The same principle applies to every genre I explore,” she shares.
For those interested in travel and cultural photography, she adds: “You’ll be amazed at what you’ll notice—sometimes the most subtle details hold a poetic quality, telling a story about the place you’re in. When visiting a destination, resist the urge to rush. Take the time to truly appreciate your surroundings, observe the details before you, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. This approach will not only help you capture more compelling shots but also enable you to tell a richer, more meaningful story through your photos.”
In general, her advice is simple: “Follow what you enjoy. Whether it’s portraits, photojournalism, urban photography, nature, or even exclusively black-and-white shots, let your passion guide you. Photography is a deeply personal artistic expression, reflecting the photographer’s unique vision and interests. It’s subjective, much like beauty, and ultimately depends on “the eye of the beholder.”
For those just beginning their journey into photography, she says: “Be yourself. Pursue what makes you happiest, because that’s what will bring you the most satisfaction and fulfillment in your work.”
Looking back at her body of work thus far, there are three series that hold a special place in her heart. “The first is the Alhambra in southern Spain. It was a place I had always dreamed of visiting, so the day I traveled to Granada, I was beyond ecstatic. Spain has countless stunning locations to photograph, yet nothing compares to the Alhambra. Mesmerizing, awe-inspiring, and even somewhat intimidating, the entire site is a true photographic gem. I often found myself thinking, if only my camera could fully capture the beauty my eyes are seeing. Despite being on a guided tour, I’m proud to have captured a range of stunning shots that do justice to its grandeur.”
“The second is Japan—a land where modernity and tradition merge in perfect harmony. From the neon lights and late-night energy of Shibuya’s iconic streets, creating the perfect cyberpunk aesthetic, to the peace and tranquility of Kyoto’s most revered Shinto shrines, which beautifully reflect Japan’s ancient spiritual traditions. And then there are the breathtaking landscapes surrounding its major cities. This trip was not only one of my all-time favorites but also one of the most rewarding photographic experiences I’ve ever had.”
“Last but certainly not least is my Mexico City urban series. I am immensely proud of being Mexican and of having Mexico City as my hometown—a vibrant, energetic, and diverse megacity. My goal with this series has been to share with the world the beauty of my city: its streets, its people, its food, its local culture, and its dynamic atmosphere. Mexico City is truly one of a kind, and I feel privileged to capture and showcase its essence through my lens.”
As she looks to the future, Fatimah dreams of continuing her exploration of the world through her lens. “I wish to continue traveling the world, capturing the essence of different places, traditions, cultures, and people. If possible, I would love to take a sabbatical for a few months to do this uninterrupted, focusing on a specific part of the world and creating a series that tells a variety of stories connected to that region or group of nations.”
Fatimah would also like to delve into portrait and people photography, blending it with both travel and urban photography.
“This would involve photographing the individuals I encounter along my journey—people who intrigue or inspire me. Through these portraits, I believe I could tell deeper, more personal stories about the places I visit, highlighting the humanity and culture that define them,” she says.
One of her aspirations is to someday become a recognized and renowned photographer, with her work reflecting her passion for travel, culture, and urban photography. “My ultimate goal is to share the beauty and diversity of our world, inspiring others to appreciate and explore it through the stories my images convey,” she shares.
