Red Solidaria Promotes Literacy Program in Rural Honduras
To provide tools for the development of reading and writing skills, the Solidarity Network, Red Solidaria, promotes a literacy program in rural areas of Honduras.
The program is aimed at youth and adults, who have not had access to any formal education process. Through the literacy process, participants learn elementary reading and writing skills, as well as basic math operations such as addition and subtraction, as reported by Poder Popular de Honduras.
This initiative is carried out through the Education Hub, in joint work with the Ministry of Education, in the areas targeted by the Network. Currently there are a total of 25,000 people enrolled in the program, the final goal coverage is 50 thousand people in all of 2023.
In this sense, literacy processes are carried out with the participation of members of civil society with the required skills, who act as literacy volunteers (Facilitators).
Under this process, each facilitator is in charge of a group of students who deliver training until they achieve their objectives.
The total literacy process is made up of 3 cycles, each lasting 4 months, in which subjects are taught similar to those that would be provided in the first two cycles of Basic Education.
In this way, the learning process has a direct equivalence with grades one through six in relation to traditional education.
The literacy phases include socialization, identification of participants and facilitators, training of facilitators, reception of registration, distribution of educational material, implementation and certification of the program.
Currently the program is advancing in departments such as: Cortés, La Paz, Intibucá and Olancho, however, the goal is to provide coverage in the 18 departments of the country, across the 2007 villages targeted by the Red Solidaria.
