Opportunities and Scholarships Reduce School Dropouts and the Incursion of Young People into Crime.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico indicated that the Government of the Fourth Transformation prioritizes attention to the country’s youth with work and study opportunities.
Since the beginning of the administration, it has granted scholarships, which have contributed to reducing school dropout rates at the basic, upper secondary, and higher levels.
According to data from the Ministry of Public Education presented by the president at the morning press conference, dropout in upper secondary education went from 13 percent in the 2018-2019 school year to 9.2 percent in 2023.
“Our fight against organized crime is essentially that they do not take young people, that they are not recruited, that they do not remove opportunities for study and work from young people,” he said.
He highlighted that one hundred campuses of the Universidad para el Bienestar Benito Juárez García were created in the country, among which are taught degrees in Comprehensive Medicine and Community Health, as well as Nursing and Obstetrics, which will train more health personnel to reverse the deficit. To date there are 30 thousand students of these careers.
Simultaneously, the federation increased the number of specialization scholarships.
“Before, 10,000 general practitioners could specialize, now there are around 20,000. (…) This is going to lead to us having more specialists,” he stated.
The Government of Mexico, he said, invests like never before in social development, education, health and care for young people through Well-being Programs, the basis of the National Security Strategy.
“Our formula is working. It takes time, but it is the most correct thing to do: Address the causes, understand that violence cannot be met with violence, that coercive measures are not how to solve the problem, that evil must be addressed by doing good, that peace it is the fruit of justice,” he remarked.
