Xiomara Castro holds meeting at the US Southern Border: Assesses the immigration crisis affecting detained Honduran individuals, particularly unaccompanied minors

Xiomara Castro, the President of Honduras, held a crucial meeting at the southern border of the United States with Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of National Security, and Ambassador Laura Dogu.

 

 

“The answer is not to marginalize migrants but to support and safeguard their rights. I plan to establish four additional consulates within the United States along with six mobile consulates, offering complimentary legal assistance to immigrants who are held at the border, with a particular focus on minors enduring hardship in detention facilities,” declared Xiomara Castro on Twitter.

 

 

The purpose of the meeting was to assess the immigration crisis affecting detained Honduran individuals, particularly unaccompanied minors. President Castro directed her high-level delegation to take immediate action to address this pressing issue, reported Poder Popular, Honduras.

“@SecMayorkas received @XiomaraCastroZ at the @CBP processing center in Donna, Texas where they temporarily host thousands of migrants, including families and unaccompanied children. President Castro spoke with Honduran migrants about their journey,” said Ambassador Laura F. Dogu on her twitter account.

 

 

During her visit to McAllen, the president toured the Donna Processing Center. Poder Popular describes that President Castro “personally witnessed the despair and sorrow in the eyes and words of our unaccompanied minor migrants and detained migrants, who are victims of poverty and violence.”

 

 

Poder Popular attributes the exodus of children from Honduras to the conditions “exacerbated by the narco dictatorship following the 2009 coup d’état. This regime severely deteriorated their living conditions, compelling them to seek survival even while separated from their families.”

Xiomara Castro announced her commitment to humanitarian migration principles and disclosed plans to open four consulates and six mobile offices by the end of 2023. Additionally, she intends to assemble a team of legal experts to provide free protection and guidance to immigrants.

 

 

Castro invited Secretary Mayorkas to join forces in understanding the challenges faced by Latin American countries striving to rectify their unjust economic and social systems. She emphasized the importance of equitable alternatives that enable governments to combat poverty effectively.

During the meeting, the Honduran Head of State also requested an extension of TPS (Temporary Protected Status) for Hondurans affected by hurricanes ETA and IOTA.

In her bilateral discussion with Secretary Mayorkas, President Castro expressed her gratitude for his cooperation and support in facilitating her visit to the border and immigration detention and shelter centers in the United States.

 

 

She emphasized the necessity of building and cooperating on fair and legal measures for migrants. She reiterated her strong commitment, stating, “Upon assuming the presidency of our Republic, I made a historic pledge to combat the drug-related issues and restore the rule of law in our country in the face of dictatorship. We aim to instill hope in our people and create conditions that can truly make a difference.”
