Costa Rica Supports Principle of Shared Responsibility on Migration
Costa Rica and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Forge a Partnership to Tackle Migration Challenges
San José, September 26, 2023 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arnoldo André, welcomed a delegation led by Daniels Ugochi, Deputy Director General of Operations at the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The purpose of this meeting was to outline collaborative initiatives aimed at addressing humanitarian and institutional needs in managing mixed migratory flows, reports the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica.
Representative Ugochi was accompanied by a distinguished group including Mrs. Michele Klein, Director of IOM Central America and North America; Allegra Baiocchi, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Costa Rica; and Diana Cartier, Head of the IOM Costa Rica Mission.
During this meeting, Costa Rica reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with international organizations to address the needs of vulnerable mobile populations and to provide support to host communities.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of the principle of shared responsibility and the involvement of the private sector in seeking sustainable solutions to migration challenges. This collaborative approach underscores the significance of international cooperation in the face of a global context that requires humanitarian responses for more effective management of migration challenges.
In attendance were Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs, Ambassador Alejandro Solano Ortiz, and Martha Vindas, General Director of Migration and Immigration of Costa Rica.
