In response to the growing challenge of food insecurity in Guatemala, the Ministry of Social Development (MIDES) has taken another step to support the country’s most vulnerable communities. On Tuesday, April 22, a new permanent Comedor Social (Social Dining Hall) was officially opened in the municipality of San Pedro Pinula, in the department of Jalapa.
This initiative is part of a broader government policy aimed at guaranteeing the right to food for those most in need. The new dining hall will provide free meals from Monday to Friday, offering 200 breakfasts and 250 lunches every day.
Meal times are set from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. for breakfast, and from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch.
According to MIDES, the meals are carefully planned and supervised by nutritionists, following cultural relevance, nutritional balance, and hygiene standards.
“Each plate served at these dining halls is guided by a technical, compassionate, and human approach. Our goal is to positively impact the health and well-being of Guatemala’s most vulnerable populations,” the ministry emphasized.
The Comedores Sociales program has become one of MIDES’ most strategic efforts to fight food insecurity. With locations in several departments across the country, the program prioritizes municipalities with high levels of poverty and extreme poverty.
By offering free, nutritious meals in a safe and dignified space, MIDES is helping communities grow stronger, healthier, and more resilient.
