Paraguay’s President Supports Project to Enhance Artisan Families’ Quality of Life

Accompanied by an artisan from Areguá, Paraguay’s President and the First Lady are endorsing the implementation of the pilot project “Improved Kilns for Pottery” in Areguá.

The aim is to boost the well-being of artisan families by using technology and efficiency to highlight the best of Paraguayan culture, reports the Agencia IP.

 

 

 

 

President Santiago Peña and First Lady Leticia Ocampos participated on Thursday in the launch event for the pilot project in Areguá, in the Central Department.

During the event, President Peña emphasized the significance of craftsmanship as one of Paraguay’s richest expressions.

“The Paraguayan government prioritizes the welfare of its people, directing all efforts toward enhancing their quality of life,” he stated.

Peña underscored the collaboration among various sectors to equip artisans with essential tools, empowering them to preserve and pass on their invaluable heritage.

He reinforced the irreplaceable nature of intergenerational knowledge, stating that while technology can be advanced, this traditional wisdom is unique.

 

 

 

 

Peña also expressed his administration’s commitment to achieving a balance between human needs and environmental preservation.

“I am confident that if we all work together, artisans in Areguá will experience significant improvements in their quality of life through increased income,” concluded the head of the Executive Branch.

Energy Efficiency

The project introduces new kiln models that will reduce wood consumption for pottery by up to 80%.

These include vaulted kilns with thermal insulation, reduced noborigama kilns, inverted kilns, and electric kilns.

Led by the Ministry of Public Works (MOPC), with support from ANDE, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Ministry of Tourism (Senatur), the Paraguayan Institute of Handicrafts (IPA), the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences of UNA, the Governance of Areguá Creative City, and local artisans and potters, this energy efficiency initiative aims to minimize the environmental impact while improving artisans’ firing systems and their health.

The pilot plan will commence with artisans from Areguá, with plans to expand the initiative to artisan groups in Itá and Tobatí.

The event was attended by Minister Claudia Centurion from MOPC, ANDE President Félix Sosa, Culture Minister Adriana Ortiz, Tourism Minister Angie Duarte, IPA Head Andrea Vazquez, and other dignitaries.
