Mexico Recognizes Latest U.S. Actions to Promote Family Unity

“Mexico acknowledges the recent U.S. measures aimed at promoting family unity. These initiatives will allow foreign spouses of U.S. citizens to apply for residency and facilitate the integration of young DACA recipients into the economy more efficiently,” reported the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) of Mexico in a press release.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs commended President Joseph Biden’s announcement of these new measures, which will enable foreign spouses of U.S. citizens to apply for U.S. residency and help integrate young DACA recipients into the U.S. economy more effectively.

Approximately 500,000 spouses and 50,000 children of U.S. citizens, the vast majority of whom are Mexican or Mexican-American, stand to benefit from these protections, affirmed SRE. These measures will prevent family separations and provide greater stability and certainty for their futures.

Mexico has consistently prioritized the protection and regularization of its nationals in the United States within the bilateral relationship. “We view today’s announced measures positively and believe that strengthening our relationship through a policy of good neighborliness, mutual respect for our sovereignties, and promoting economic cooperation is essential for ensuring safe, orderly, regular, and humane migration,” declared SRE.

“The Government of Mexico is convinced that both nations must continue to foster openness and collaboration to ensure regular pathways for migrants. This understanding recognizes that modern migration is driven by necessity and aims to avoid xenophobic or discriminatory actions,” stated the Mexican government.

Mexico will persist in promoting orderly, safe, regular, and humane migration, strengthening family ties, and improving the quality of life for migrants. The Foreign Ministry stated it will continue to work closely with its U.S. counterparts to ensure that these processes are carried out efficiently and fairly.
