El Salvador Boosts Cruise Tourism, Surf Events, and Hospitality Training in 2025
El Salvador’s tourism industry continues to show dynamic growth in 2025, with major developments positioning the country as an emerging player in the regional and international travel scene.

Cruise Arrivals Make Waves
The Port of Acajutla welcomed two major cruise ships this season: the Villa Vie Odyssey and Nieuw Amsterdam, carrying over 460 and nearly 3,000 passengers respectively.
These arrivals marked a significant milestone for El Salvador’s cruise tourism sector, energizing local economies and offering visitors curated experiences across national landmarks such as the Santa Ana Volcano, Cerro Verde, Joya de Cerén, and the historic center of San Salvador.
The influx of travelers directly benefits restaurants, tour guides, transportation services, and other local enterprises, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation as a cruise destination.

Surf Tournaments and Cultural Energy
The 2025 surf season kicked off with the ISA World Longboard Championship, part of the renowned #SurfCity initiative. This international event not only highlights El Salvador’s world-class waves but also diversifies visitor experiences by promoting other regional attractions.
Complementing the championship, Surf City launched a series of coastal wellness activities including yoga by the beach, jiu-jitsu, dance classes, running events, and live DJ performances—blending sport, health, and culture in a single platform.

Training the Next Generation of Tourism Leaders
Recognizing the importance of human capital in the tourism ecosystem, MITUR—through its #GastroLab #SurfCity program—is offering free four-month culinary training for young adults aged 18–35 in regions such as Sonsonate, Ahuachapán, Santa Ana, La Libertad, San Miguel, and La Unión.
These sessions aim to equip participants with practical skills to enter the tourism workforce or launch their own ventures, supporting inclusive economic development. Virtual information sessions continue to be hosted to ensure broad community access.

Additionally, MITUR is encouraging professionals to become certified through the Regional Program for Quality and Sustainable Tourism, strengthening standards across the industry.
Holy Week Tourism Sees a Rise
El Salvador also reported a 5% increase in international visitors during Holy Week compared to 2024, with 139,000 tourists arriving primarily from Guatemala (43%), Honduras (24%), and the United States (23%). These numbers reflect strong regional interest and the effectiveness of ongoing promotional campaigns.

With a mix of strategic cruise partnerships, globally recognized surf events, and impactful training programs, El Salvador is fast becoming a vibrant hub for sustainable, inclusive, and adventure-focused tourism in Central America.
