Mexico Gains $22 Billion from International Visitors in 2024
Mexico’s tourism industry continues to thrive, with international visitors contributing more than $22 billion to the nation’s economy from January to August 2024, according to Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, Secretary of Tourism. This figure represents a 6.6% increase compared to the same period in 2023, showcasing the resilience and growing appeal of Mexico as a global travel destination.
Rodríguez Zamora further revealed that in the first eight months of the year, Mexico welcomed 29 million international tourists, marking a 5.5% growth over the previous year. These figures reflect a robust recovery and renewed interest in the country’s diverse attractions, from its vibrant culture to its pristine beaches and historic landmarks.
Based on the findings from the International Travelers Survey, published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the increase in foreign exchange income highlights a promising trend for the tourism sector. Visitors spent generously, with air travel tourists averaging $1,178.3 per visit, a 2.4% rise from January to July 2023. This surge in spending signals Mexico’s continued success in offering experiences that attract higher-value tourism.
Looking ahead, Rodríguez Zamora shared an optimistic outlook for the rest of the year, with projections indicating the arrival of 45.2 million international tourists in 2024. This figure is expected to generate an estimated $33.45 billion in economic impact—a staggering 36.1% higher than in 2019, before the pandemic, and 8.6% more than in 2023. The Secretary attributed this positive trend to Mexico’s ability to adapt and diversify its tourism offerings, catering to both luxury and budget travelers alike.
As air travel spending is projected to average $1,151 per tourist by the end of 2024, up 14.9% from 2019, Rodríguez Zamora emphasized the strategic importance of community tourism. This sector, which fosters direct employment and income for local populations, plays a crucial role in sustaining the livelihoods of those in Mexico’s rural and indigenous communities. In line with President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s vision, the Secretary stressed the need to continue promoting community-based tourism initiatives that bring long-term benefits to the people of Mexico.
